The Original Gravity label is back with more of its fully functional but also exceptionally flair-fulled funk sounds, this time with Luchito and Nestor Alvarez behind 'Tighten Up.' It is another choice reissue that has been dug carefully out of the vaults and comes in seriously limited quantities on 7". Luchito & Nestor kick off with the original version of 'Tighten Up' on the a-side and it's packed with high-tempo breaks and sung-spoken vocals. On the flip is a more fiery and explicitly Latin affair with the warming chords and florid horns of Nestor Alvarez's 'Just Add Vibes.'

Southside Movement was a Chicago funk band that was busy during the mid 70s releasing a total of three albums between 1973 and 1975 on Wand and 20th Century Records. They also collaborated with the lush tones of soul singer and fellow Chicagoan Jackie Ross on records for Chess and Brunswick that have long since been forgotten. Until now, that is, because P-VINE has put together this great reissue of the music that was only released in limited test presses back in the day, and has added to it some previously unreleased tracks. The standout here is 'You Are The One That I Need' with its tropical funky vibes.

Greg Jolly's 1981 jam 'It's Getting Sweeter' is the subject of this new tidy reissue on US label Enjoy. It's a real deep funk classic that has a lo-fi feel and vocals full of love and passion from both the male lead and the sweet female backers. The chords and drums are gently persuasive and it's a great way to ease yourself into an evening. This 45rpm is backed with 'Love Is' which picks up the pace and has a more funky and propulsive beat with acrobatic falsettos up top finishing it in style.

Goodge is back with more deep and pressing funk sounds, this time with his Echoes of yesterday long player. As the title suggests, it finds him offering up a view on music's past influences at the same time as showing off his genuine respect for what has gone before. Across the 12 tracks, he goes into lush late night and jazzed up sound worlds where melodies lodge themselves deep in your brain and the funky drums keep you moving. It's an expansive world of emotion and a superb showcase of the artists ability to transcend time and space with his take on the roots of the sounds.

Congolese collective Les Mamans du Congo and French producer Rrobin are back with a follow-up to their acclaimed 2020 album. The project is focused around ancestral Kongo lullabies sung in Lari by the five 'Mamans', bringing deep-rooted tradition into the modern era by interplaying their singing, rapping and hand-played rhythms with Rrobin's dexterous production. Gladys Samba cuts a formidable figure as the lead figure in Les Mamans, and she sounds majestic throwing down on the likes of 'Futa Nfuka' atop low-slung drill backed up by a chorus of women. It's a vibrant continuation of Congolese heritage for the 21st Century, celebrating the insight of the past in order to look forwards.

Brazilian samba and Afro percussion come together in perfect harmony on this record from Tamba 4. If you are a fan of the likes of Getz/Gilberto then you will find lots to love in the lush grooves which transport you away. It comes on heavyweight gatefold vinyl with heavyweight sounds kicking it off on 'The Hill' as subtle samba sway occasionally shines through and on the likes of 'We & The Sea' its is airy flute that takes the lead over the busy piano playing. 'Chant Of Ossanha' has a cheeky feel and 'Consolation' a dramatic edge to close with.

Hilton Felton's Family & Friends is a rare groove classic that now gets reissued for the first time ever courtesy of P-Vine. The master keyboardist has a cult following thanks to his magically mellow and sophisticated playing style. He was prolific, too, recording several great albums but none as definitive as this one, which is a sought after and pricey gem if you want an original. It has many highlights such as the fantastic jazz-funk cover of the Delfonic's classic 'La, La Means I Love You', groove-laden soul in 'The Power Of Love (It's In My Heart)' and the lively arrangement of 'Family Reunion.'

Harking yet another Tone Poet 2024 edition to come, comes this new forthcoming reissue from the esteemed master drummer Elvin Jones: Poly-Currents. After his six years with the seminal John Coltrane Quartet, Jones signed with Blue Note in 1968 and began building his own career as a bandleader. His first two albums for the label were spare trio outings - Puttin' It Together and The Ultimate - both featuring saxophonist Joe Farrell and bassist Jimmy Garrison. For 1969's unfettered post-bop exploration Poly-Currents, Jones expanded his ensemble with additional woodwinds and percussion while still maintaining spacious realms for the musicians to delve into on modal band member originals including 'Agenda,' 'Agappe Love,' 'Mr. Jones,' and 'Whew'. Jones is joined throughout by a cast that includes Farrell on tenor saxophone, English horn and flutes, George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone, Fred Tompkins on flute, Wilbur Little on bass and Cuban conguero Candido Camero.

Now, in conjunction with the Mingus Estate, the complete collection of those sessions make it to vinyl for the first time ever. Mingus Takes Manhattan - The Complete Birdland Dates: 1961 - 1962 is taken from the original reel-to-reel tapes used for the radio broadcasts at the time. These rare recordings comes with a 44-page book with a foreword from Christian McBride.

It is packed with refined sounds mastered by the maestro Stefano Amerio and features Older on piano next to Yuri Goloubev on double bass and Mauro Beggio on drums. The sounds flow freely, the pianos are quick and lively as fingers dart about the keys and the constant ticking of the drums and weight of the double bass keep things rooted in the here and now. A sublime sound for sure.

Les Demerle Sound 67 is a group defined by core member and prodigious drumming talent DeMerle, who famous playing power and rhythmic elasticity is what stands out here. It is a high class jazz record with his bold presence and command of modern jazz drumming front and centre as his side men do a fine job of filing in the spaces with Randy Brecker on trumpet and rock diva Genya Ravan adding her own vocals. This album is a great find in some long lost vault that contains plenty of evidence as to why DeMerle would go on to be so revered in ensuring years.

Art Pepper's Stardust originally came in 1985 when producer John Synder finally got his long held wish to get Pepper in the studio. He booked him in for a week at New York's Village Vanguard while still under contract to Contemporary Records. Art promised to make four albums with Synder and duly did and now one of them made from those first sesssons is reissued here having been remastered by Grammy winner Michael Graves and recut by Jeff Powell. The album features Pepper's takes on Hoagy Carmichael and a version of Duke Ellington's 'In A Mellow Tone,' amongst more.

The Walter Lang Trio features the eponymous Lang playing piano alongside Thomas Markusson on bass, and Sebastian Merk on drums. They pair light and airy pins with dainty rhythms and an air of performance that brings extra life to these sounds. It makes for a most romantic listen and one that has a warming glow and twinkling stars off in the distance. Starlight Reflections is a loved up jazz sound and the first of two albums with a second one Moonlight Echores to follow soon after on the same label, Jazz Shinsekai.

Hansson & Karlsson only ever recorded themselves playing with Flasket burnner's Bengan Dalen once, and this Crescendo 1968 album is the result. This is the first of two such volumes and is a gem that has been discovered in the vaults. It was recorded at Club Cresendo at the Art Museum in Norrkoping and finds Dahlen on violin and the setlist features well-known classics next to some more newly discovered pieces that have never before been available on record. A fine bit of niche but nice Swedish jazz history.

The Walter Lang Trio has three albums all dropping in pretty quick succession at the start of 2024. They are a virtuoso collective who drop the first two of the three, Moonlight Echoes and Starlight Reflections, on the same day at the end of December while the third, Pure, comes in early spring. This album is another masterful mix of romantic jazz sounds, gentle tinkling piano keys and sublime sophisticated lunge sounds that allow the mind to wander up amongst the stars. Lovely stuff for lovers of all forms of jazz.

Made and released way back in 1958, Somethin' Else is a classic jazz album by the American alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, notably his only ever album for the esteemed Blue Note label. It famously hears Adderley enlist the help of trumpeter Miles Davis as one of its sidemen, and this was an ongoing relationship that later paved the way for popular jazz as a whole; without Somethin' Else, we wouldn't have Kind Of Blue, for which Adderley would contribute his sax playing just a year later. Though it is a testament to the unity of two great core musicians, we also hear the piano stylings of Hank Jones, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Art Blakey.

Continued Sound has kicked off a new series here that looks to explore the soul sounds of New Jersey. Volume one is a real doozy of a compilation that features music music written, composed and produced in the state on the Atlantic coast of the US by the influential pair of pioneers George Kerr and Paul Kyser. From the 60s through to the 90s they had a huge impact on soul and shaped the sound of acts like Soul Generation, Florence Ballard, Linda Jones, The Moments, The O'Jays and The Whatnauts and were often sampled by hip-hop greats of ensuing generations. This album is a great testament to the richness of their sound.

Silent Majority was one of many monikers for an enduring Philadelphia soul band best known as The Formations, made up of Jerry Akines, Johnny Bellmon, Reginald Turner and Victor Drayton. Their chameleonic name-changes - which also included Hot Ice and The Corner Boys - allegedly owed to a lack of commercial success, which produced an incentive for the band to constantly metamorphose at the suggestion of various labels and other market forces. Regardless of success in their own time, these Silent Majority gems, 'Frightened Girl' and 'Something New About You', are more than tantamount to their talents, sifted from the only two 7" vinyl records attributed to the band in the late 60s.
