Fred Everything
Long Way Home
Lazy Days US
Long Way Home is the first Fred Everything album in a decade, but it has been worth the wait, as the Canadian producer delves into musical territories. "Cinema Paradiso" is underpinned by lush strings and crisp break beats, while "By Day" features the soulful vocals of Sio, accompanied by gentle piano lines. Even the title track focuses on a more electro-funk sound than the typical Fred Everything sty;e - albeit one that is soaked in strings. The pace finally picks up on the electronic disco of "Un Dimanche Apres-Midi" and fans of Fred Everything's deep house style will not be disappointed, with the blissed out vocals and trippy keys of"Wherever You Go" sounding like one of the most soulful tracks of 2018.
Oscar Mulero
Electric Shades EP
Token Belgium
Although he is mainly associated with his own Warm Up or Pole Group labels, Oscar Mulero started his relationship with Token back in 2008. Now a decade later, the Spanish techno powerhouse is issuing Electric Shades, a sci-fi obsessed release on the Belgian label. "Echo" resounds to eerie bleeps and a subtle groove, while at the more visceral end of the Mulero scale is the rough, doubled up rhythms of "The Voyage" and the searing, Millsian "Violet Dust". Clearly Mulero is on a journey on this release as the dense, heads down "Chasing Shadows" recalls his loopy past, while he shows a more refined, tunneling approach on "The Cycle" and "Out Of Sight".
Teklife
On Life Vol 2
Teklife
The Teklife collective feel as if they've been around for donkey's years but, in reality, this is only the label's seventh outing to date, and they've truly come a long way since their debut. In case you hadn't clocked on, this is pure footwork magic at its purest level, stepping and twisting all sorts of sample chops, building and deploying all sorts of nutty riddims. With 16 cold-ass killers to choose from, you certainly won't be stuck for choice, and there is so much vibe to fill your sets with - just leave it playing from start to finish; we're pretty sure you won't be lacking an audience. Dutty, Chicago-inspired business
Macca
/
Loz Contreras
Lost Origins
Spearhead
Frequent sonic sparring partners (but killer solo acts in their own rights too) UK roller conjurers Macca & Loz Contreras return to Spearhead with four stone cold charmers. "I Need You" is an instant heart-melter with a big swooping string sample and loin girding vocals, "Lost Origins" is a delicate piano primer with heaps of space for singer-of-the-moment Becca Jane Grey, "You Want Me, You Need Me" takes us on an introspective tip with heavy filters on another soul stirring sample while "Don't Give Up" brings this session to a close with lavish disco feels that aren't dissimilar to early 2000s Hospital. Beautiful.
Cassius Select
Fake Death EP
Hypercolour
Following up a couple of great releases for Matthew Herbert's Accidental Jnr, Sydney producer Cassius Select debuts on Hypercolour with a fresh batch of crooked beats and twisted rave experiments. From the jagged and angular dub of "They Shook", the moody knackered house jam "Loose Pursuit" or the brooding grey area groove of "Yut" which calls to mind the crossover experiments of London's Autonomic crew nearly a decade ago. This collection bass heavy and highly urbanised jams all feature a truly UK influence and make a welcome addition to the Hypercolour catalogue.
Mr Tea
Make Yourself At Home
Connaisseur Germany
Mr Tea is Michael Devin, a veteran UK producer from Liverpool that now resides in San Francisco. Over the years, he has collaborated with legends such as Andrew Weatherall and Jagz Kooner and released on imprints such as Leftfield's Hard Hands, Engrave Ltd, Discotexas and Paper Recordings. His new full length comes courtesy of long running Offenbach based institution Connaisseur - who present Make Yourself At Home. It features nine offerings of sleek tech house grooves. From the moody bounce of dynamic opener "Schnick Schnack Schnuck", the sun-kissed melodicism of "Asking For a Friend" to the evocative/balearic-tinged ambient bliss of "Tears In The Sun", this is truly a cohesive effort.
Blawan
Wet Will Always Dry
Ternesc
Some eight years on from his Hessle Audio debut, Blawan has finally got round to releasing his debut album. Predictably, it's rather good, offering an eight-track assault on the senses built around his now familiar clanking, industrial-tinged polyrhythmic techno rhythms, foreboding electronics and paranoid, claustrophobic aural textures. Most of the sounds - including the percussion hits - were created using modular synthesis, which gives Wet Will Always Dry a particularly atmospheric and otherworldly feel. There are nods towards the likes of Surgeon and Livity Sound, as well as Rhythm & Sound/Basic Channel style dub techno, but the album's greatest strength is that it never sounds like anything other than a fine set of Blawan club tracks.
Afriqua
Vice/Principle
R&S
Following his R&S debut last year, Berlin-based American Afriqua (aka Adam Longman Parker) presents Vice/Principle, which veers into psychedelic territory and is inspired by the cosmic departures of '70s krautrock and jazz. After several years developing a hefty catalog of releases, Parker has embraced his R&S signing as an opportunity to dive deeper into his signature, yet versatile sound. From the hypnotic and ethereal bounce of "Melamed", the broken beat hi-tech soul of "Noumenon" or the immaculate production of "Cerch" which showcases Parker's classically trained foundations, he serves up a cohesive effort here which further demonstrates his abilities as one of electronic music's most innovative sonic heroes.
