Andy Buchan
Out All Nite
Hot Digits Music
It's fair to say that Andy Buchanan is on a roll. He enjoyed a hugely successful debut year in 2017 and has since kept up the pressure via EPs on Spa in Disco and Masterworks Music. His Hot Digits debut is a typically cheery and positive affair, with rolling, Italo-disco inspired opener "Spectral" - all restless arpeggio lines, dreamy chords and rising melodies - setting the tone. Of the four original tracks on show, the throbbing and attractive "Mind Blown" is probably the pick, though the Balearic boogie/laidback piano house flex of "Your Promise" is almost as inspired. Aussie adventurer Dr Packer heads up the remix package with a simply scorching, TB-303 heavy "Acid Disco" remake of opener "Spectral".
Two Mamarrachos
Aberrated
Nein
Former Is It Balearic twosome Jaime Sagastibeltza and Borja Campion continue to impress with their occasional singles on Nein. On "Aberrated", the San Sebastian-based duo doff a cap to the greats of the mid-'80s EBM movement, wrapping Fairlight CMI style stabs, mutant vocal samples and mind-altering acid lines around a cowbell-heavy rhythm track. Connor and Mijo & Felipe Gordon take it in turns to transform the original version, with the latter's throbbing take - closer to early European, EBM-era takes on Chicago house than, say, Nitzer Ebb - delivering a particularly satisfying dancefloor workout. Connor takes the opposite approach, serving up a 111 BPM chugger rich in sweaty metallic percussion hits and fuzzy post-punk bass.
Blende
feat
Mickael Karkousse
Do You Remember?
Eskimo Belgium
Since first joining the label in 2012, Blende has been one of Eskimo's standout artists, releasing a string of attractive Balearic disco workouts. Predictably, the London-based Swede has done it again with "Do You Remember", a shimmering, sunshine-friendly Italo disco-goes-Balearic pop workout complete with strong lead vocals from collaborator Mickael Karkousse. Skip the radio edit and head straight for the Extended Mix, a far more satisfying and life-affirming beast that uses positive chord progressions and druggy arpeggio lines to build energy before Karkousse's killer vocal drops in midway through. It's accompanied by a tasty instrumental mix that is, if anything, even more glassy-eyed and grandiose than its predecessor.
Lele Sacchi
Dreaming Won't Do
Rebirth
Gabriel "Lele" Sacchi joined Rebirth last year, following an impressive 2016 solo debut on Prins Thomas's Internasjonal imprint. Surprisingly, this is the producer's first single for 12 months. "Dreaming Won't Do" is impressively positive and colourful, with Chic style disco guitar stabs and dreamy vocal samples from a classic disco-boogie cut rising attractively above an Italo disco-inspired groove. Tiger and Woods reach for the pianos on their fantastic peak-time house rework, before former Visionquest twosome Benoit & Sergio re-cast the track as a strobe-friendly chunk of Moroder-inspired Euro-disco brilliance that will have dancers reaching for the lasers in no time at all.
Rudy'S Midnight MacHine
Midnight Safari EP
EXCLUSIVE
FAR (Faze Action)
Robin Lee takes a break from his day job as Faze Action to slip into the occasional Rudy's Midnight Machine alias for this outing on his own label. It's a mellow, atmospheric ride into pastures you wouldn't normally associate with Faze Action, although "Midnight Safari" is smooth and luxurious enough to feel right in any context. "In The Air" has a mysterious air to it, helped in no small part by the evocative Eastern lilt of the strings running through the centre of the track. There's a sassy boogie step powering "Reach Backless," while "Windchimes" flips the script with a semi-ambient live bass reverie. It's back to the party one last time with "Solar Plex" though - this record is about synthy funk first and foremost.
Andy Buchan
Robot Future
Spa In Disco
Smiling nu-disco producer Andy Buchan made a big impression in 2017, thanks in no small part to well-received releases on Thunder Jam, Chopshop and Disco Fruit. Here he pops up on Spa in Disco following tasty 2018 outings on Hot Digits and Masterworks Music. "Future Robot" is something of a rushing, life-affirming treat, with waves of Italo-disco style synths, P-funk squiggles and robotic vocoder vocals rising above a snappy nu-disco beat. Dubai's Don Dayglow does a solid job on the remix, emphasizing the track's Italo-disco influences via a bld and druggy new arpeggio style bassline. To complete the package, Bunchanan takes his scalpel to No Smoke's 1989 UK Afro-house classic "Koro Koro", somehow making it even more percussive and bass-heavy.
Xinobi
Far Away Place (Remixes)
Discotexas
It would be fair to say that there's a head of steam building behind "Far Away Place". It was originally featured on Bruno "Xinobi" Cardossa's 2017 sophomore set On The Quiet, but has since appeared as a single (on Anjunadeep, no less). We're willing to wager that this edition, featuring some fine new remixes, will be extremely popular with both DJs and dancers. Last year's fine rework from Jody Wisternoff and James Grant is joined by new rubs by Tensnake and Pete Herbert. Predictably, it's Tensnake who takes top prize via a sparkling, funk-fuelled, synthesizer heavy version that sounds like a summer anthem in the making. That's not to say that Pete Herbert's revisions aren't good, though; in fact his breezy, extra percussive Balearic disco Dub is every bit as essential.
Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra
Black Sun
Far Out Recordings
Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra, Daniel Maunick and David Brinkworth's whole-hearted tribute to 1970s Brazilian disco, last showcased its celebratory, sun-kissed wares way back in 2014 via an eponymous debut album that's still capable of setting the pulse racing. Black Sun, the outfit's second album, contains another superb selection of authentically played and produced disco songs and instrumentals. Check, for example, the blissful jazz guitars and heavy "walking" bass of "The Two of Us", the richly orchestrated and horn-heavy "Step Into My Life" and the spine-tingling, piano-fired breeziness of "Flying High", whose seductive female vocals are smothered in just the right amount of reverb.
Roliva
Ruido Capital
EXCLUSIVE
Nightnoise
Amsterdam imprint Nightnoise's latest recruit, Roliva, has previously released music on Nein Records and Phisica, suggesting a love of trippy cosmic disco and psychedelic electronics. These twin musical obsessions are evident on EP opener "Bajas Frecuencias", whose combination of chugging cosmic disco bottom-end, jammed-out Clavinet lines, crunchy electric guitars and chanted vocals reminded us of Daniele Baldelli's recent productions. They can be heard, too, on the cosmic disco/cosmic rock fusion of "Ruido Capital", which also includes some killer jammed-out electric piano riffs. Damon Jee remixes the same track, upping the psychedelic electronics and lifting the tempo with typically mind-altering results.
Chuggin Edits
Boogie Bigness
EXCLUSIVE
Bandolier
The Chuggin Edits crew is renowned for serving up, well, chugging disco reworks. We were a little surprised, then, when we discovered that they've pushed up the tempo a little on this latest Bandolier excursion. This is not a criticism, though, because all three tracks hit the spot. We're particularly enjoying "I Get Satisfied", a bouncy, brilliantly edited and subtly tooled-up version of a jazz guitar and Hammond organ-powered funk workout slightly reminiscent of Mr Scruff's "Get a Move On". Elsewhere, "Boogie Business" is a densely percussive, trumpet-heavy jazz-funk-neets-disco-house slammer, while "Funky Music" is a hazy, flute-heavy chunk of summery, mid-tempo bliss.
Jex Opolis
DZE
Good Timin'
Jex Opolis is a Canadian musician and DJ with a long and fruitful musical history. He lives in NYC and runs the Good Timin' label. From his melody-focused releases of his own imprint to his big room excursion on Gerd Janson's Running Back - Jex manages to connect the dots across genres and scenes in a way that allows him to float above them. His latest release features the neon-lit boogie down sexiness of "DZE" and "Please Be Good To Me" to the Todd Terje-meets-Vangelis strut of "Please Be Bad To Me" which is nu-disco exactly the way we like it!
Sould Out
Mandrill Cuts 004
Furious Mandrill
For the fourth edition on Mandrill Cuts, they are honoured to include Mexico City's Sould Out (FDL/Masterworks Music) to the label roster, with two dancefloor jewels that will burn up the club. "Cosmic Wayo" is a nice serving of congo fuelled Afro-disco-funk, filled with harmonic trumpets, happy vocals and a rhythm section to make you get up and boogie. While on "The Magical Mystical" they take on a classic by a certain main with one thousand fingers, taking you back to a golden era in disco with its majestic piano chords, sexy rhythm guitar licks and classic vocals - plus some newly added cosmic FX all bringing some magic to the release. Good time guaranteed on this one!
Josefin Ohrn & The Liberation
Rushing Through My Mind: The Mang Dynasty Versions
Mangled
Ray Mang's slick disco stable Mangled calls upon a new pair of provocateurs to lay down a sun-kissed steamer to blow away those winter blues. The agents in question are Josefin Ohrn and The Liberation, and their "Mang Dynasty" is every inch the Balearic idyll rendered in a long form discoid jam. The extended version fully floats out into gently psychedelic waters guided by Ohrn's infectious hook, "I've got you rushing through my mind." For those who just want the groove there's the instrumental mix available as well, or you can always plump for the radio edit if time is short.
Marcel Vogel
/
Khalil Anthony
Brown Curls
EXCLUSIVE
Lumberjacks In Hell
The unstoppable Vogel machine is back on Lumberjacks with another serving of soul-soaked house goodness to warm the cockles as we step into Spring. This time around he's called on one of the great house vocalists of our times, Khalil Anthony, to lay down a vocal on "Brown Curls" that melts over Vogel's peppy, organic production. Nebraska bring a deeper, chunkier flavour to the track with their remix, and the results are just as captivating. Anthony's also on hand to croon over "You Are A Star", an equally simmering jam with more of that dusty house pressure from the deep end of the pool, while "Those Moments" finishes the record off on a funky, instrumental tip.
Books
Sour Grapes
Omena
Having tickled the fancy of a fair few DJs with last autumn's High Praise Edits release, Books is naturally keen to showcase original productions again. Hence this fine EP for the fast-rising Omena label. Title track "Sour Grapes" is our pick of the bunch, offering as it does a fine balance between dreamy, soul-flecked musicality and chunky, fireside-warm deep house grooves. Laurence Guy's remix of the same track, which reminded us of the hybrid deep house/broken beat/jazz-funk fusion tracks of 2000 Black, is also superb. The hits keep on coming elsewhere on the EP, too, with both sample-heavy, deep disco-house workout "Taking Care of Business" and the undulating, electronic audio sunshine of "The Spice Must Flow" both hitting the spot.
Repetentes 2008
Boulderball
Future Times US
The latest loved-up blast of electronic colour from the Future Times camp comes from Repententes 2008, the anything-goes alias of producer Gabriel Guerra. This debut album no doubt fits neatly in the kaleidoscopic, synth-heavy FT catalogue, while at the same time offering a range of tracks united by the quirkiness of their approach. Listen carefully and you'll hear the influence of 1980s video game soundtracks, Brazilian jazz-fusion, hook-driven electronic pop and new age Japanese ambient music played at the wrong speed. It's incredibly difficult to pin down - Guerra is not one to settle on one style, groove or idea for too long - but also hugely enjoyable. It may take a few listens to really sink in, but it's more than worth the effort.
