Scuba
Caibu
Hotflush Recordings
SCB had been an alias for Scuba's dance floor-focused techno tracks, but as Caibu and the EPs that preceded it demonstrate, it is now also a vehicle for the UK producer to explore different styles and to articulate his concerns about modern society. Tracks like the bleep-heavy "Test Tubes" and the storming, big room "Manufactured Consent" - the title a riff on the classic Chomsky tome - show that the project remains synonymous with killer techno, but Caibu succeeds largely by showcasing SCB's other side. "The Cut" is a shimmering, widescreen piece of music, the tone-laden breaks of "Freedom for the Fifty" sees Scuba seek justice for a wronged group, while the warbling, off-centre "Extinct" is an understated sound track for end of times.
Efdemin

Naif (unmixed tracks)
Curle Belgium
Efdemin's 2008 mix CD on Curle, Carry On - Pretend We're Not In The Room showed that he was as adept and inventive behind the decks as he was in the studio. A decade later, the same holds true for the follow-up mix, Naif, but this time the boundaries are more blurred. Consisting of 29 unreleased tracks - 10 from the German producer himself and 19 from like-minded artists - the selection runs the gamut, from the hazy, abstract tones of WaWuWe's "Beams" and DIN's noisy "Glide", into hypnotic dance floor techno such as "Laveline", Efdemin's bleep-y collaboration with Konrad Springer, the glorious mid-tempo minimal roller "Watte" - recorded as Sollmann & Gurtler and then 'versioned' by Efdemin and expansive dub tracks from Pom Pom and Marco Shuttle.

From The Vault Part IV
Dynamic Reflection
For the fourth instalment of its From The Vault series, Paul Boex' label opts for a less banging than usual approach. Area Forty One's 'Sunday Morning cut' of Abstract Division's "Deformation" sets the tone for the release with its deep groove, while Deepbass & Ness come together to create the rolling groove and atmospheric tones of "Flight 103". Stefan Vincent's contribution, "Aro", is similarly deep, with some tropical samples embedded in its lithe rhythm, while remixers Milton Bradley and Delta Funktionen also use the opportunity to take Abstract Division on a more esoteric path. In the case of the former, it is articulated on the churning, dubby "Shifted Reality", while on the latter's re-work of "Floating Point", a jerky, angular rhythm prevails.
Quirke
Whities 015
Whities
Josh Quirke made his Whities debut back in 2016, providing the seventh release on the revered UK label. Now he is back for instalment 15 and doesn't disappoint. "Vatied City" is an unusual combination, featuring warbling, Warp-style early 90s melodies unfolding and unravelling over a dense, loopy rhythm that has a particularly heads-down approach. "Transport Craving" sees Quirke drop the tempo and intensity levels to deliver more sublime atmospheric hooks, this time realised against dubbed out drums and croaking percussion, while on "Hydraulic Deer", the UK producer delves into abstract territory, as haunting tones and noisy broken beats collide.

Remixes Zwei
Odd Recordings
Already supported by DJs as diverse as Adam Beyer and Victor Calderone, this remix package succeeds thanks to its truly contemporary outlook. Petter B, who has released on Drumcode and Modularz, takes on Arjun Vagale's "ModMatrix" with truly impressive results. Underpinned by a rolling, tribal groove, it's the accompanying searing, solder-iron riff that will have a devastating impact in clubs. Coyu, who runs Suara, opts for a slightly more conventional approach for his take on Ramiro Lopez & Andres Campo's "Pachamama". The groove is pumping and linear, augmented by rickety percussion and layer upon layer of reverb, but it's the building filter at the heart of the arrangement that will do the damage with every play.
Sophie Nixdorf
Black Water
You Are Strange
The latest release on You Are Strange comes from its owner, Sophie Nixdorf. While "Black Water" has nothing to do with the Octave One classic of the same name, it still packs a powerful punch thanks to its insistent rave stabs, gritty, grimy drums and pitch bent vocal sample, placed deep in the arrangement. It also serves to consolidate Nixdorf's reputation as a producer and will appeal to a wide cross section of DJs. The label has tapped Eric Sneo to remix "Water" and the storied German techno producer rises to the occasion. Upping the tempo and dropping a cavernous, rolling rhythm, in Sneo's hands, Nixdorf's rave stabs turn into gargantuan sonic waves, teeming with menace.

HYS001
Hayes
Hayes is a new label from Portugal and it opens its account with this storming split release. First up is Temudo, who delivers "A1", a gritty, acid-soaked loop that sounds like it was inspired by early Lost releases. Moddullar, who has put out EPs on Planet Rhythm and Dynamic Reflection, opts for a cleaner but still tough loop techno track with "Encrypt", while on Temudo hooks up with ViL and -2. The fruits of their collaboration is "Discordia", which again sees the release towards a slightly more abrasive and mysterious take on dance floor techno. Rounding off this impressive debut is ViL in solo mode, with the tough, percussive "Szandor".

Beauty of Inconsequenz
Storyline EP
Unterland
The CLR affiliated German producer Sascha Borchardt aka Monoloc inaugurates his new label here named Unterland - a collaboration with Beauty of Inconsequenz entitled the Storyline EP. Based heavily on field recordings, this collection of brooding soundscapes have a cinematic score throughout. Full of tension and suspense, this imaginary soundtrack is the perfect score to a horror film. Although trying to fit within a very particular aesthetic, there is still quite a variety of moods within their sonic framework: from the dank and dust covered deep-dubstep of "Gentle Shift" or "Thrilling" to the pitch black ambient drone of "Flowing" or the textural noise abrasion of "Unterhalb": brace yourself! Forthcoming Material will come from Monoloc himself and friends, and each release will aim to 'tell a story' throughout their planned productions thus far.

NOWHERE01
Something Happening Somewhere
Nuno Dos Santos enjoys referring to the tracks he releases on Something Happening Somewhere as "stories". Thus, NOWHERE01 - the first volume in a new compilation series - is billed as being full of "shards of tales long forgotten". In reality, it's a fine set of previously unreleased tracks and remixes, though Dos Santos's description is much more poetic. While the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout, highlights include Fatama Yamaha's dreamy and lucid, deep house-meets-Balearic synth-pop tweak of Kiani and His Legion's "Electric", the sleazy and percussive techno-jack of Tracey's "Stratosfear", the jazzy deep house dreaminess of Love Over Entropy's "H1" and the deep space electro brilliance of Versalife's interpretation of the same artist's "Off The Grid".

Bitter Music Remixed EP02
Perc Trax
This second set of remixes from Perc's recent album begins in stark contrast to the first series. EP02 gets under way with the frenetic, tribal groove and trance stabs of Dax J's take on "Unelected". The tempo drops again for Lucy's take on "Wax Apple". In the Italian producer's hands, it turns into a stepping rhythm shot through with mysterious textures and drones. Changing course once again is Matrixxman with his interpretation of "Rat Run". While the US producer doesn't take away any of Perc's grit and grime, he does use a nickel-plated, percussive backing track to make his remix sound like it was recorded in a Chicago warehouse.

Bitter Music Remixed EP01
Perc Trax
In this first volume of remixes, Ali Wells gathers an impressive cast to rework tracks from his Bitter Music album. First up is John Heckle's Head Front Panel project, which turns Perc's "The Thought That Counts" into an intense, dense techno groover, led by intricate riffs and tones. By contrast, Hodge's take on "Chatter" is loose and free-flowing, underpinned by massive, dubbed out drums and a rhythm that sways and swerves in all the right places. Pessimist's take on "Exit" pushes the release back towards the opaque and, in this instance, mysterious, thanks to its shadowy drones. Last but certainly not least is Dale Cornish with a superb, stuttering minimal house take on "I Just Can't Win".
Ansome
British Steel
Perc Trax
Ansome is the enfant terrible of the UK techno scene. Real name Kieran Whitefield, his hardware-driven tracks are always noisy, energetic and irreverent. On British Steel, his latest venture for Ali Wells' label, all these characteristics are abundant. The title track is a pummelling, broken beat affair, while "Marching Powder" sees him opt for a straighter groove, as concrete kicks support droning, visceral textures. "Poison Your Body" is techno in sound but punk in nature as a vocal screeches and shrieks over a pounding industrial rhythm that replicates the sound of someone scraping their finger nails down a black board. Closing track "Granite & Mortar" is just as twisted, with Ansome returning to broken beats and spewing out electronic feedback and guttural rage.
Ghost In The MacHine
One Louder
Perc Trax
Rarely appearing away from their own Genosha Basic imprint, The Netherlands' Ghost In The Machine are next up on Perc Trax and carry on with the label's MO for abrasive/no holds barred techno. This EP hits as hard as anything on the label in recent years. Industrial strength grinder "The Holy Grill" leads the charge with its darkly austere elements and one of the meanest Reese basslines you've ever heard. Gnarly body basher "Hold My Drink" pushes the threshold once more, with its overdriven bass drums like a kick to the head, while its metallic textures slice away at you with pure wrath. Ending the sonic torment is "PSKDT" (What Does It Mean?), a cyclical warehouse techno stomper that's perfect for the peak time slot.
Scalameriya
Kepslok
Perc Trax
Serbian industrial noise terror Nikola Grebovic aka Scalameriya returns on the home of modern body bashing abrasion Perc Trax, taking a break from recording with usual partner in crime VSK with the Kepslok EP. The title track's pounding rapid fire snare attacks attack you head on, while its tough kicks hit you mercilessly in the head and those screeching analog synth wails show no mercy whatsoever! It's then the rise of the machines in post-apocalyptic fashion on the furious junkyard beats of "Annex No 3" followed by the thrashing warehouse techno jack of "Geargrind". Handle with care, this stuff certainly isn't for the faint of heart!
Ansome
Stowaway (Remixed)
Perc Trax
Perc Trax has commissioned some of techno's most respected artists to rework tracks from Ansome's debut album. First up is the titan tag team that is O/V/R. In James Ruskin and Regis' hands, "Snake Eyes" turns into a cavernous broken beat track laden down with haunted vocals. For his part, Perc keeps a straight focus for the heads-down techno version of "Bad Blood", while Randomer turns "Back Alley Sally" into a labyrinth of doubled up drums and shuffling rhythms. The last remix is left to the newest artist but Ossian doesn't disappoint and his take on "Blackwater" is a wild, analogue acid workout that recalls the wild sonic excesses of Woody McBride.
