Ethyene is a producer, DJ and label manager from Lyon in France, delivering house music that finds its roots in the sounds of Detroit, Chicago and Manchester. He has had releases on top labels such as Moonrise Hill Material, Kolour LTD and Editorial to name but a few. He has patented a certain style of mid-tempo house music; applying a french touch aesthetic to disco, r&b and hip-hop sample references. He teams up with Moonrise main man Folamour on the neon-lit boogie down jam "Why My Love", some lo-slung soulful hip-hop on the lush "Why My Love", super sexy deep house for the late night (with an R'n'B edge) on "Loneliness Of The Shadow Dancer" and a sultry nu-jazz beauty to close out the fine EP affectionately titled "I Sold Yayo To Buy Kicks". Washington DC based Better Listen had a great run of releases back in 2017 with Thatmanmonkz, Chevals and Closed Paradise all appearing, and being particular standouts.

Guillaume Coutu Dumont returns! The Quebecois minimal maestro serves up his first release in three years since his Revolution In The Cycles EP for London's Freerange Records. Entitled Shouts Moans & Significance, it comes courtesy of revered local imprint Musique Risque - which is equally as retrained on the release front, with this one following up a killer 2016 release by German producer Jichael Mackson. Opening with the deeply hypnotic affair "Histoires Vraies" with its mesmerizing bell melodies reminiscent of recent work by Thomas Melchior or DeWalta - coincidentally Coutu Dumont has previously released on the latter's Meander imprint. His rich background in electro-acoustic and avant garde music is evident up next on the oddball groove of "Far Is The Field" while "Whatever's Inside" is trippy and low-slung minimal house for the afterhours - something you'd imagine label boss Vincent Lemieux playing up at Panorama Bar on a Saturday morning.

Bristol imprint Banoffee Pies stands out like a true jewel within its fair city's musical scene, challenging the status quo of heavy bass driven music with its carefully curated selections of music from the deeper and more minimalist spectrum. Now making their smooth grooves available on digital format, the label provides a retrospective of some of their highlights over the last few years. The tough and rolling jack of Ruf Dug's "Cosmic Feelings" featured on their very first release, Swede in Sydney Adam Stromstedt (co-head of Lyssna) is a staple of Banoffee Pies now and served up the sublime hypnotica of "Gedank" last year on BP06, as did Rotterdam's Philou Louzolo (on BP04) with the lush and ethereal deepness of "Alter Ego". Jaffa Surfa's "Souled Out" from 2016 is another worthy addition - this funky and rolling tech house stomper by the Hungarian scene veteran is truly lit!

French soul legend Ludovic Llorca made a welcome comeback to the industry with his long awaited full length 'The Garden' early in 2017 - his first new material in 16 years! It was certainly worth the wait and proved that sometimes it really is quality, not quantity. The man behind such timeless classics as "Indigo Blues" and "Precious Thing" now presents two selections from the LP, that have been remixed with a distinctively French Touch - when only the best will do! These remixes come courtesy of Parisian imprint Sampling As An Art, run by none other than S3A: who serves up a typically dusty and deep rendition of "All Right" that's suited to sexy late night mood lighting. There is also a handy Radio Edit featured for your convenience. Also worthy of mention is Rim Laurens rendition of "Waiting", where the Nardonne native delivers an emotive trip-hop rendition reminiscent of Bristolian colelcitve Wild Bunch and their output in the 90s.

Zurich based label Ararat Masis are back after a great inaugural release from Nico Sun last year. For their second release, they have invited five great artists. They bring a new form of warm and cosy melodies from the region of the holy mountain of Ararat to the world. These five dynamic artists are creating a complete new way to experience oriental originated sounds, with their understanding of blending these tunes with energetic electronic elements. Oceanvs Orientalis is a collective formation founded by Safak Oz Kutle, which aims to challenge the aesthetic perception in electronic music. On "Lycian Waltz" we hear the Turkish producer delve deep into the exotic on this hazy and low slung affair. Dance Spirit & LUM deliver some deep and atmospheric tech house on the slinky "Calumet" where the American-Argentine duo really deliver the goods. Finally, Istanbul's Baris K never fails to impress - as anyone who has witnessed one of his mazing DJ sets will attest. His contribution takes you deep into the Middle Eastern after hours scene, on this smoky/dusty exploration in deepness.

Dutch conceptual label Who's Susan are back after a slew of awesome releases by scene favourite DJ Windows XP. This time they have recruited the services of London's Federico Lange (Axe On Wax Records) and Deejay Astral (Steel City Discs/Shall Not Fade - now based in Berlin) for some nifty lo-fi house shenanigans. Lange is up first with the moody late night jack of "Electric Relaxation" and gets things off to a great start, leading up to the tough and swing fuelled roller "Shut 'Em Down" which is covered in a nice sheen of dust: this will appeal to fans of Robsoul or I'm A House Gangster style stuff. Samuel 'Astral' Walker's contributions take a much more mature approach and flirt with the deeper end of the spectrum. The emotive and sombre introversion of "Duality" respectfully takes it cues from greats like Larry Heard or Theo Parrish, while "Metaphysical Therapy" is more upbeat take on classic US house from the early '90s.

It would be fair to say that Eli Escobar's second album, Shout, is not a carefree affair. Inspired by his growing anger at American politics, it's a much more poignant and melancholic affair than his party-hearty debut album. As such, the 15-track set is arguably his strongest collection to date, with cuts such as "Nightmare Rag", the gospel influenced disco deep house cry for freedom "The People", twisted and intense "ANGR", blissfully slick and tactile "City Song" and superb "Going On?" - a kind of sorrowful deep house update of Marvin Gaye's most heartfelt work - proving that Escobar is a far more thoughtful and musically savvy producer than many incorrectly believed. There are plenty of groovy and quietly positive moments, too, fuelled by Escobar's belief that love may be the answer to America's mounting problems.

Malouane is Clement Mallein from Paris, who follows in the local tradition of creating sexy, late night deepness that exists behind a thick haze of smoke, if catch our drift. The influence of Pepe Bradock, DJ Gregory and DJ Deep can be heard all throughout this EP and when you've got reference points like these across your work - you're definitely in our good books. For local imprint In The Box, the 'Long Way For The Homies' EP follows up a great one by Marion Poncet (Traumer) and is the kind of dusty, sampladelic deep house that sits somewhere between the Three Chairs sound of Detroit and the sunkissed MPC jams of Berlin's Money $ex crew. From the sexy late night mood lighting of the title track and the lo-slung smokers delight that is "Keep Yo Mama Clean". There's a great remix of it up next - a sombre yet emotive rendition by Times Are Ruff that takes it further into the afterhours and Cody Currie's neon-lit boogie down version which by contrast brings something more uplifting.

Dutch trio Yor Kultura head up the Laut & Luise imprint and are well regarded within mainland Europe's festival circuit - with appearances at some of the most respected events such as Garbicz Festival, Amsterdam Dance Event and of course America's infamous Burning Man. These guys can truly bring the goods! Beginning with the entrancing cosmo-balearica of "Lotus" with its woozy arpeggios and lazy rhythm patterns. On "Oak" they're then into some sleazy and slinky tech house (on the depper tip) that's perfect for the afterhours. The EP's true standout is the slo-mo tribalism of "Willow" with its smooth polyrhythms and hypnotic atmosphere, which you could imagine played live to much fanfare. It also gets a series of wicked remixes: Fleeting Wax main man Mehmet Aslan delivers a rendition that nails that indie-dance vibe, as heard by him on labels like Emotional Especial and Huntleys + Palmers. The dub mix by Aslan also features next and forgoes the wacky vocals for a more woozy and trance inducing version: that we were well into!

Legendary Belgian imprint R&S are always on the pulse when it comes to showcasing the most dynamic talents at present within electronic music. On this new various artists EP they feature some young guns with fresh and impressive sounds on display. Other than heading up the Sulk Magic imprint, you would have heard Bird of Paradise from his hot releases for the likes of Correspondant, Throne of Blood or Me Me Me. The Steve Leggett dub of "Alone Again" is a tough and banging jacker that calls to minds the sounds of Tom Diciccio or Berlin's Fachwerk imprint - not what we were expecting, but not altogether unpleasant either! By contrast, the evocative classic house vibe of G-Prod's "D-Light" is one of those tracks that has you in its grasp from the first beat. Its lush chord progressions and immaculate rhythm programming is one of the best tracks we've heard in 2018 thus far. Finally, they get back onto the heavy artillery in the form of "Collider" by Argentinian producer Hermetics: here's a brooding and slow burning industrial techno workout.

With little to no information on hand as to the genesis of this collaboration between SUED boss SVN and the superbly named Club No-No the imagination is left unfettered to speculate. Listening to both tracks, you are moved to ponder whether they are the result of SVN and Club No-No (aka Snorre Magnar Solberg) embarking on a field recording trip to the local zoo. The sounds of unspecified wildlife is wedged deep within the grooves of both sides, with the first track the sort of ambient techno you feel Actress wants to make as the merest of percolating textures and soft basslines hinting at a degree of rhythm amidst a calming backdrop of found sound. Then it is a markedly more urgent production and the lack of kick drum offers interesting mixing possibilities for the more talented of DJs out there.
