The Irish breakbeat giants Bulabeats make their start to 2018 in fantastic form with this high energy collaboration between label founder JohnnyPulse and renowned Leeds based MC Coppa. The duo combine for a classic sounding UK hip hop arrangement entitled 'Never Get Old' which takes us through the day to day story of an average person overcoming obstacles and having a good time. This release comes complete with JohnnyPulse's dubbed out riddim version and a very exciting ska infused rethink entitled the 'Maars Reskank'.

Much like the way their previous releases have surfaced, German label SUED see no reason to press the button marked 'engage prior fanfare mode' just because they reach double figures with the arrival of their 10th release. Therefore it's down to us to lay praise on a wonderful suite of tracks from PG Sounds, the production partnership of label co-founder SVN and Philip Gelberg. It's the second PG Sounds release for SUED after the pair dropped 007. Much the same could be said about the six untitled cuts on SUED 010, where personal pitch preference really dictates whether PG Sounds operate at hazed out beatdown tempo or the sweet place near to the more abstract house cuts.

A ridiculously fun remix package of Danish breakbeat guru Badboe. For the uninitiated, Badboe has developed a style that has clear echoes of 60s and 70s funk yet still fits seamlessly into the modern musical landscape. This man has dipped his toe in almost any genre you care to name - from house to trance; hardcore to trip-hop. On Break The Funk we see his superlative breakbeat jams remixed by the genre's cognoscenti, with the insouciant Fuzzbox Inc remix of "Lose Your Funky Self" and the junkyard percussion on the Pulp Fusion reshape of "Funky Intro" among the many highlights on offer here.

Boe "Badboe" Pedersen has always been one of he more reliable sources of floor friendly, funk-laden breaks jams. While his style sticks to the tried-and-tested, there's a quality present that's often lacking in similar breakbeat productions. Pump Up The Funk, his second full length, has plenty of dancefloor chops. It features a range of cuts created using snappy rhythms, familiar hip-hop samples (Missy Elliot and Redman are both notable inclusions) and fat funk grooves. There's a casual swing and groove to the material that's endearing, too - something that can't be said about many of his competitors' creations. If breakbeat is your bag, this comes highly recommended.

Flip the switch and get with the program: evergreen party purveyors Breakbeat Paradise have commissioned a whole bunch of reversions and each one is an instant booty-buster. Highlights abound throughout this raucous bass-bizzled nu-funk adventure but only a twit wouldn't pack Badboe's rub of Kool Hertz En Vouge sampling sizzle-up "Whatta Joint", JiggyJoe's orchestral disco-strung halfstepper rub of Calagad 13's "Back To The Power" or Badboe's take on Rudd's Supremes-slicing "Shake It Out". Paradise found.

Party breaks producers always say that it takes a long life of slogging before you make it to heaven, but not for this mash-up king who had reached Breakbeats Paradise early. That said Tom Showtime has paid his dues too with years of delivery the party ammunition. Here he joins forces with the aforementioned label to provide more of the usual light-hearted floorfillers. There are five jams to enjoy here including the funky, Fresh Prince-era hip-hop vibes of "Supernaturalflow", the tough breaky grooves of the Salt-N-Pepa-sampling, "Dancefloor Seasoning" and the sunshine vibes of dubby dancehall jam, "King Of Clubs".

Although the cover of this latest instalment in the Paradise Breaks series echoes the famously trippy sleeves of '70s prog rockers like Yes, the music couldn't be more modern. Actually that said, many of the productions on here do plunder the '70s for inspiration but they choose funk over wizard's capes and that. Highlights include the mighty "Bad Mother" which combines raw soul divas vocals, wah-wah guitars and thumping break beats, J-Sounds' tight and groovy break-funk jam "On And On" and the super catchy shuffle-pop gem "Nobody Else" by Arteo. A totally mixed bag and all the better for it.
