Serum Presents: Extra Blunts EP

Who can say no to an extra blunt? Make that six extra smoke-fests as three legendary Philly faves roll in with their finest VIP and dubplate murkery. Serum takes the lead with the first half of the game scoring goal after goal. The groaning tones of "The Finger" are finally released from solely dubplate status, "Battle Cry" is a gut-punching, loin-girding step-side banger while Trigga returns to assist on a sneaky update on one of Serum's biggest tunes - "Phenomenon". Firefox 'Sizes' up the dance with a ridiculously gritty VIP on "Keep It Raw" and the annihilating shocker "Overproof" while Heist shakes up "90% Rusk" for 2017 floors. Not a dry eye, body or pair of trousers in the house.

DJ Brockie & Ed Solo

The Story So Far
Undiluted

In all due respects, if you need background deets on Brockie and Ed Solo you need to go back to school. If you don't, then you know what level of trouble we're dealing with here as the two hugely influential titans of the genre revisit their Undiluted vaults for an incendiary collection of high grade bruisers dating back to the turn of the century. Still hitting with the same spiked out futurism as they did almost 20 years ago, tracks like the distorted riff blunderbuss "Cheltenham Bass" the slappier, break-riddled "Mind Overload" and the star-gazing riff of "Dutty" still pack major punches to this day. Not ones to just look back, they've also commissioned a load of on-point remixes from some of the sharpest acts in contemporary jump-up: Turno, Serum, Annix, T>I... Need we go on? The story continues.

The don Randall continues to smash things to "Pieces".... 16 tracks of serious rolled-out dark groove soul, it's nothing but heads down grit and uncompromised creativity with every track playing the consummate role of lead player; T>I's soul-shaking hip-twister "All I Do", Benny L's epic groaning yes-fest "Dr No", Vapour's sci-fi drama stepper "Looking Back", Trex's cosmic alien lullaby "Short Story" are just some of the highlights as we roll deep to the very end as Seba blesses the collection with a superlative re-touch on Randall, Goldie and Dego's seminal, scene-shaping bomb from 93 "The R". Randall... Still doin' it after all these years. Essential for all drum & bass heads.

The Dog Knows

Just as you thought it was safe to walk the streets, Konichi & Decimal Bass crash land into your grimy little universe once again... And nothing is safe. Their largest body of work since last year's album Forever, expect nothing less than six tracks of riot material; "The Dog Knows" is a barking mosh of a jam with electrified bass and a cracking sample, "Invasion" (with Vacuum) is so tightly sprung it should come with a health warning while "Cold Killer" sees them tagging up with mandem du jour Turno for an iced out shred flex. Elsewhere "Get It" wins gold in the 'weirdest bassline of the EP' award, "If I Told You I'd Have To Kill You" buzzes and snaps with a hornets nest bassline while "Maintain" kicks down your house with a roughhouse late 90s style bassline. K9 thumbs up.

Calibre

The Deep
Signature

When it comes to making drum and bass that strikes a balance between the needs of DJs and home listeners, few are better than Dominick Martin AKA Calibre. It's for this reason that the album format suits him so well. The Deep, his 12th full-length in total, could well be his best set yet. Jam-packed with effortlessly soulful moments, evocative piano flourishes, rich live instrumentation and yearning vocals, it's a far more expansive and ambitious set than most D&B albums. It also supplements his trademark, club-ready rollers with tracks that look to modern soul, jazz breaks, dub and R&B for inspiration. Throughout, Martin barely puts a foot wrong, delivering a set that more than stands up to repeat listens.

Macky Gee

Riffs alive! Macky Gee flexes hard right here as "Aftershock" flips between a heavenly euphoric feel good vocal hook and one of the most infectious basslines he's ever conjured. Dig deeper into this bassline treasure chest for tin-can kicking scrappage on "Make Me Feel", tongue in cheek hedonism on "Rave To The Grave", darker techier twists on "Suspicious" and a whole load more. All stacked up with big sing-along bottom ends, this is one of Macky's biggest EPs in a very long time.

Feel the force: Macky Gee's Down 2 Earth returns with their second "Gravity" collection and it's every bit as essential as its namesake... Hizzleguy trumps the game with an 8-bit remix we've always dreamt of. Full of muscles and mushrooms, you'll be collecting gold coins for a long time to come. Other highlights include the nagging clipped harmonic bass riff on Tsuki's "Kit Kat", the coiled spring rhythm of Matzet's "Loop 95" the croaking bass and rattling percussion of Leaf's "Business" and Replicant's methodical horn-sampling roll-out charmer "Tiger Marks". Get your coats, you've (gravitationally) pulled.

While the mighty Aswad once told us "Don't Turn Around", the even mightier Total Science have now advised us to "Turn Around"... And with its dreamy cosmic synths, surging vocal and classic snare rolling jungle break, we know whose orders we're going to believe. The fun doesn't stop there as the all star cast continues... Break joins the party for the bone-rattling Headzy tear-up "Big Time Winners", Calibre jumps on the remix tip with a delicate lilting twist on the Riya-fronted "Walk The Same Lines" and DLR taps in for the heads-down, purring-sub stepper "Too Close For Comfort". Heavyweight and high grade, this is an incredible EP.

Murderation: Filthy Habits have been pushing out high grade drum & bass for some years now, but this is a whole new level. Highlights include the way "Artificial Intelligence" subverts everything you know about drops with its rising, paranoid riff; the way "1.17AM" creates the sensation of driving 100mph down the wrong side of the motorway; the way "Retaliation" buzzes and jitters like a digital bees nest on fire and the way that sudden extra jungle fill on "Yeah" well and truly knocks you off your feet each and every time. Powerful, uncompromising and utterly, utterly filthy.

Souped Up

Souper douper danger: Serum takes the controls for his label's second release with three more killer jams. "Earth Rot" pings and zips with a high frequency metallic rubber ball bassline while "Ripped Open" lives up to its name tears us all a new one as it stabs hard with a Mampi-style sense of focus and drama. Finally "Pulse-S" represents Serum's more leftfield sense of funk with a tin-of-bees bass buzz that wobbles raffishly off the kicks. Yet another soup filled with at least three of your five a day, once again Serum smashes it in his own unique way.

Man of the moment Benny L has had an incredible rise over the last two years, guided and nurtured by Ram Trilogist and Audioporn founder Shimon, Benny's groaning, rumbling basslines have become a benchmark that sit right up there with Serum and Voltage as the best in the contemporary game. Case in point: "Low Blow", a tune that's been unavoidable at festivals throughout the summer and famously made Goldie pull the best bass faces the Mixmag live stream has ever seen. It's backed by three other crucial rollers: the iced-out Headz homage "Route Zero", the thunder-striking drum-shattering "Hold It Down" and the whirlwind sense-zapper "Home." Four absolutely crucial cuts from one of this year's most essential rising drum & bass stars.

Spirit / Marcus Intalex

Releases don't come much deeper or more heartfelt: These two Spirit collaborations are the first posthumous Marcus Intalex tracks and there are likely to be more in due course. Naturally they're savagely heavy in every possible sense of the word. "Untitled MCR" hits with this amazing drone bass that sweeps in like a fighter jet, "Acid Monday" lives up to its name with skeletal acid writhing and flexing around a rough tribal step. Both timeless, understated, unapologetic and essential. Marcus Intalex rest in peace.

Keep away from the panic button! It might feel like you've been surrounded by ghosts of rollers past, you might feel like you've been hypnotised by the sinister gods of jungle but it's only the Utrah brothers and they've packing some of their best work so far... Both "Riddims" and "LowDefign" are up there with Serum and Benny L on that pranged out new groan flex, "Pathogen" is more directly trippy and sinister with its molten bassline and punchy cymbal-slapping drums while "Far" sets fire to your house and stands on the street mooning at you when you run out for safety. Ultrah sound.

It doesn't get much deeper than this: Dom's first posthumous release, this was locked and loaded in the chamber just before he tragically passed in June. Time to pay respect; both on dub for well over a year, their heavy-demand status speaks for itself. Azza accelerates the intensity onf "Raise Up The Pressure" over a signature Dominator riff, all stripped back and spiky yet bouncy. "Roach Rizla", meanwhile, is a step-by-step guide to citrus bliss with the one and only Grima. Both essential in every possible way. Rest In Peace.

What a trip it's been for Spectrasoul; going solo with their label Ish Chat in spring 2016, they've assaulted us continuously over the course of 18 months. Taking us deep, dark, soulful, savage with abandon; never before has their melting pot been so fizzy or foundational. Naturally this third album is no exception as we glide and slide between the styles; the "Glimpse"-style space soul of "Move On", the Fracture-like hardcore references on "Push & Pull", the trembling chimes, sweeping strings and delicate vocals of "Wrong To Love You"(with LSB), the classic techstep movement of "Pinger" are just a handful of on-point constructions from a duo who are living the creative dream right now. Essential.
